Book Review: Getting the Gospel Right.

Image
The book before us, happens to be one of the more definitional works on why the purity of the Gospel is so important. The Author, RC Sproul, gave us in this magnificent work both a critique of the movement's proposition; and a defence of the gospel as it has been put before us in the Holy Scriptures. And I think that these words sum up the whole point: "the loss of Christian unity at any point is tragic and destructive. When that loss threatens our unity in the gospel itself, it is catastrophic."  (p.9)  And then we are told:  "The truth of the gospel must be maintained for the Christ's sake and for our own. Indeed it is our eternal link to Christ and the means through which we become His in the first place." (p. 10)  It is with these sentiments that He then takes the time to show the errors which have gone unnoticed by many who were so desperate to follow this work of the Devil (ECT AND GOS)  Now there is no doubting that there is a unity that the Gospel pr

Book Review: something must be known and felt.

Here we have a book which should be taken seriously by all serious minded Christians; who if they are are protestant in their thinking must always be willing to adapt their current understanding on doctrinal truths and practical issue (think of 'sempre-reformanda' which means always reforming). And if this were taken seriously then it should always welcome deeper understanding on certain issues. Let us always be of this frame of mind:  we should never say that the previous generations was in error; but that because of certain things being put in the spot light; therefore, many other areas which are equally important did not get as much coverage-- they were either taught upon in a foundational manner or simply assumed to be agreed upon. And this is the case at every high period of Church History. And it means some points will eventually have their moment at a later date. Take note of these words from Stuart Olyott . He writes: "In true Christianity God's revealed trut

Book Review: the Christian life

Sinclair B. Ferguson has said this very insightful statement in the first sermon in this collection on doctrine and there vital position in the faith; and why they are necessary to not believe but also to adhere too. And I would agree with Him.  "I began to see that in fact the 'deeper truths'  (if there ever was such a thing)  are really the old basic truths of the gospel." (Pg. 1) Indeed that is the central point! Each and every Christian must come to an understanding of the gospel truths not only in the form of Catechism; but also from good and faith pastors who are charged with delivering them unto the truth as Paul tell us (Romans 6:17). Therefore,  it is a blessing to be taught the word both in systematic fashion with regularity and in a thematic fashion when there is a needs; and one such need is when it comes to doctrines which this work is centred upon.  It is a wise practice repeat the familiar truths of the gospel several time over the course of a church

The misdirection of King James Onlyism.

In the flier (to the left) we have a conference by a KJV Onlyist which seeks to show how the KJV is the "inspired" and "most correct"  bible version; or translation. Whether this particular gentlemen personally put together what we are told in this leaflet or someone else did it for him; it comes down to one common point: because it has his name attached to it; it therefore is him who must take the criticism that it garners. But here I simple want to point out the error contained within its message.  (1) an inadequate understanding of textual criticism. We are told that "the field of textual criticism has raged war against the text of scripture..."   In this statement we are introduced to large amount of naivety being employed. Because this is exactly what T.C does not do. Instead the main objective is to know what the Originals actually said and this is based on the incredible amount of copies of manuscripts that we have at our disposal which allows for t
